The Tea Master
a substantial grant from Canada’s Bravo!FACT for production.
It was shot on RED in the beautiful mountains of British
Columbia in the spring of 2009 and hit festivals in 2010.
The Tea Master was an important vehicle for Aaron in
developing his story telling and filming style. It is with this
script that he discovered how to write a short following a
proper three act structure, something that can be very
difficult in 8 pages. This focus on structure has become
the foundationof everything Aaron writes.
The film’s shooting style was inspired by Japanese Anime,
specifically the cult classic Afro Samurai. Aaron and
cinematographer Loyd Bateman wanted to create the surreal
feel of an anime but with real people in real settings. They
employed simple elements like digital camera moves, CG blood,
and a unique color grade to build a world that teeters on the
edge of fantasy.
